Quick Neighbourhood Actions / Quick Hits and How to do Them

A quick hit is usually an action on an uncostly issue that the city or other target was supposed to take care of, but will be taken care of with more pressure.

(Ex. filling pot holes, re-paint crosswalks, clean up a park, doing building repairs)

STEPS:

  1. ID the issue – These issues often come up at general neighbourhood meetings. When an issue is easy to solve, quickly proceed to solve the said issue.
  2. Pick a date – Immediately set the quick hit up. Pick a date that the target and the community will be able to come out (Usually late afternoon/early in evening on weekday).
  3. Organize the block or building or broader area – Ask people to do a network sheet or petition, agree to flyer. Start a yes list with people who commit to coming out.
  4. Make a plan together (small planning meeting)– Who is the target? What are the action demands?
  5. Line up the target – Start with a lower level candidate to meet demands.
  6. Turnout – Confirm to make sure the turn out is happening. Get flyers out. Schedule time for flyer delivery.  Call people to re-confirm they are coming.  Do reminder calls the day before.
  7. Pre-meeting, the Action and debriefing– Meet with action members an hour before the target shows, going over a planned list of demands, “what ifs,” agenda, etc.  Do a sign in sheet.
  8. When the target responds and the problem is fixed, send victory flyers and let people know about the next event.
